Sylvia Gosse – The Printer (1915)

Seen at the Swindon Art Gallery and Museum, in their new(ish) exhibition Going to Town: Scenes of Urban Life.
Sylvia Gosse - The Printer (1915)

Swindon’s regularly changing exhibitions are always interesting. They really make the most of their collection of modern British works. Some new discovery always jumps out at me when I visit and this time I especially like the above work. Never come across her work before but it seems she was a student, then (business) partner of Walter Sickert. Based just on this one painting, the influence of Sickert can be seen I think.

Selected other works in the exhibition, although there are many other really worth a look:

Richard Hamilton – Interior Study (a) (1964)
John Nash – The Dredgers, Bristol Docks (1924)
Claude Francis Barry – Tower Bridge, London – A War-Time Nocturne (1940)
