Workshop of Robert Campin – Annunciation Triptych (Merode Altarpiece) (1427 – 1432)

Just started reading 100 Masterpieces in Detail and this is the first painting that leapt out at me. Very interesting elements – the Virgin Mary’s red (rather than the usual blue) dress, the depiction of the tiny baby Jesus (not a dove, but an actual baby) and the fact that Rogier van der Weyden was an apprentice of Campin and worked on this picture. Excellent book and I will post more entries from there in the next couple of weeks.
